This Wednesday, members of the disability community will join people from the civil rights, social justice, environmental, women's, seniors, and other communities to speak out against the assault on the ADA, civil rights and other federal protections. Narrowing interpretations of the Constitution and federal law in the courts, aggressive activism by the likes of judicial nominee Jeffrey Sutton, and the promotion of extremist propaganda from the well-funded Federalist Society, all are working to push an agenda that supports "States' Rights" over people's rights.
We are putting a human face on "States' Rights" ideology. Join Pat Garrett, who was left with no legal recourse for her firing from a state hospital after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Join Ann Rudolf, Chairperson of Westside Mothers, who, as a result of Jeffrey Sutton's work, was left without recourse after the State denied critical tests for her deaf daughter under Medicaid. Join other individuals and their lawyers to show Congress and the public how the rights of everyday people are being decimated by powerful special interests. Join Sen. Tom Harkin who will speak out against the undermining of Congress's authority to pass laws protecting civil rights and other critical issues.
Sen. Harkin has specifically asked that this not be another "talking heads" press conference. He wants to be surrounded with the people whose rights are being rolled back. He wants us to be there with him. He has often fought the fight for us -- now we need to show up and speak out against Sutton, against other judicial nominees who threaten our rights, and against the rolling back of our rights in the Courts.
